Normandy Landings
Mason Riley
The Normandy Landings, codenamed Operation Overlord, was the liberation of Germany's western front. It required extensive planning. It took place on June 6, 1944. The landings took place on five beaches; Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. Over 156,000 American, British, and Canadian troops invaded the shore. The battle lasted about a month. This battle was also called the beginning of the end of the war.
The invasion was taken in stages. At first, Allied forces attacked all over Europe leading Germany to believe the attack would be somewhere else entirely. So enemy forces on Normandy were less than normal. Paratroopers were sent in behind enemy lines a couple hours before the frontal attack. Joseph Beryle was one of those paratroopers. Then later, infantry was sent to shore to attack from the opposite side of the paratroopers. Sherman Baxter also gives an account on this attack.
