Using Anne's diary as a guide, Goodrich & Hackett set to writing a play version of the story, which brought the story to the stage. Married in 1931, these writers worked together for approximately 30 years.
Goodrich and Hackett spent two years writing the stage adaptation of Anne's Diary, and later, this adaptation won a Pulitzer Prize, the Drama Critics Circle Award , and the Tony Award for the best play of 1955-1956. Following this success, the two writers adapted the stage version into a screenplay.
